2005 Summer Institute
Program News:
Three top-notch general session
speakers are scheduled for the 2005 Summer Institute
bringing messages of student achievement, advocating
for children, and connecting the mind and heart.
The Institute will run from July 11-14 at the Desert
Springs J.W. Marriott Resort & Spa in Palm Desert,
Calif. (Another article on the Institute site is elsewhere
on this website.)
“
We have brought together a trio of speakers who are nationally
recognized and will bring us information that Partnership
principals have sought,” said Dr. James Garvin, senior
consultant, The Principals’ Partnership. “These
speakers not only have important information to share, they
are highly motivational and entertaining.”
Dr. Pedro Noguera, professor, Steinhardt School of Education,
New York University, will be the first general session speaker
Tuesday morning, discussing “Creating Conditions that
Promote Student Achievement.” Noguera, who also directs
the Center for Research on Urban Schools and Globalization,
focuses his work on ways schools are influenced by social
and economic conditions in the urban environment. He has
written two books and more than 100 research articles and
monographs.
Kati Haycock, director, The Education Trust, will speak on “Raising
Achievement and Closing Gaps Between Groups” during
the second general session Tuesday afternoon. One of the
nation’s leading child advocates, Haycock was formerly
executive vice president of the Children’s Defense
Fund and founded The Achievement Council in California, an
organization that assists principals and teachers in predominately
minority schools. Her current organization advocates for
young people and assists urban school districts and universities
in working together to improve student achievement.
The Thursday general session speaker,
Mark Scharenbroich, helps audiences see how simple acts
can have a large impact
on their professional and personal lives when their minds
and hearts are connected. He has traveled more than two
million travels speaking throughout the world during the past 25
years; earned an Emmy for his ABC television special, “Doing
Great,”; and won awards from the National Education
Film Festival and the U.S. Industrial Film Festival. He will
speak on “Building Connections.”
Principals should look for registration materials,
which they will receive both electronically and through regular
mail, around the beginning of April.
