Consultant Receives
Gruhn-Long-Melton Award

Jennings on receiving the Gruhn-Long-Melton Award from NASSP
at its annual convention.
The award commemorates three noted leadership
experts, William Gruhn, Forrest Long and George Melton, whose
work spanned seven decades and who helped define secondary
school leadership in the 20th Century. The Award is given
by the National Association of Secondary School Principals
in recognition of life-time achievement in middle level leadership.
Ron began his teaching career in Ann Arbor, following his
graduation from the University of Michigan. He also served
as an assistant principal, principal, curriculum director
and Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction
in the same district. After earning his doctorate in leadership
at Eastern Michigan University, Ron taught at the University
of North Carolina, Greensboro, where he also directed the
principal preparation center and program. Currently, he is
on the faculty at Eastern Michigan where he continues to
work closely with principals throughout the nation.
In addition to his work with
the Partnership, Ron works closely with the California-based
Galef Institute’s comprehensive
school reform initiative which involves principals and schools
throughout the U.S. He has also served as a planning and
assessment consultant to the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation,
NASSP, and dozens of school districts throughout the nation.
A prolific writer, Ron’s work has appeared in dozens
of journals, including the NASSP Bulletin, Principal Leadership,
Educational Leadership, The Administrator, the Middle School
Journal, and many others devoted to educational improvement.
He is also the author of four books on leadership and school
improvement.
Ron and his wife, Marsha, make their home in Ann Arbor. They
are the parents of two grown children.
